Biography

Brandon Yoo is an associate professor of Asian Pacific American studies in the School of Social Transformation and the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. He is an affiliate faculty of counseling and counseling psychology and the Department of Psychology. His background in counseling psychology frames both his research and teaching interests. In particular, he is interested in examining unique racialized risk and resiliency, and their impact on the mental health of diverse marginalized communities (including Asian Americans, transracial adoptee, and multiracials). In collaboration with students and colleagues across disciplines, Yoo has published extensively on topics of perceived racism, internalization of the model minority myth, acculturation/enculturation, ethnic and racial identity, ethnic and racial socialization, and measurement development. He has similarly taught and will continue to teach courses related to the mental health issues of racial minorities, including cultural psychology, race and child development, and Asian American psychology. Yoo received the SERD Outstanding Contribution to Scholarship on Race and Ethnicity Award (Section on Ethnic and Racial Diversity, Division 17 Counseling) from the American Psychological Association and the Early Career Award from the Asian American Psychological Association. He serves as a consulting editor for the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Asian American Journal of Psychology, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
